Infinite Coles shares soulful dance single BGM
NYC-born singer, dancer, and model Infinite Coles returns today with BGM — a new single that pays homage to 90s dance culture while celebrating self-love and Black identity. Released on Don’t Sleep/PIAS, the track marks the second release from Infinite Coles’ forthcoming debut album.
BGM — which stands for Black Girl Magic — draws on personal experience, threading themes of empowerment, LGBTQIA+ celebration, and resilience through soulful vocals and euphoric house production. The track is produced by long-time collaborator Zach Witness, known for work with Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean. Its standout hook delivers a message of healing and confidence: “Don’t go crying to your mama… Shine your light. Baby love your life. It’ll be all right this time.”
The single is accompanied by a vibrant visual, shot on the streets of Puerto Rico and directed by Coles’ close friend Robot Moonjuice. The video sees Infinite Coles performing alongside dancer Stella Santiago, in a kaleidoscopic celebration of vogue-ballroom culture.
Speaking about the track, Infinite Coles said, “BGM is about loving yourself and the skin you’re in, no matter what colour or race. We are all magic, and we are all powerful. Growing up I worried about the opinions of others and feared being judged. Now I’m just in a space where I am unapologetic. The past few years have helped me grow so much and learn to love and accept myself. It’s made me fearless, determined. IDGAF. It’s authentically me. The video is Directed by my best friend Robot Moonjuice. What was supposed to be a vacation turned into work lol, but I loved every second of it. A lot of the art was made by us, from the jewellery to the hairpieces. The dancer in the video is my friend Stella who I met last year in Puerto Rico. There is more music to come from me and my debut album, stay tuned, I’m just getting started.”
Producer Zach Witness added, “BGM started as a jam in the kitchen of Robot Moonjuice’s Manhattan apartment. I made the track on the spot with a laptop and a small midi keyboard. It’s the first thing we ever made together. By the end of it, Infinite was laid on the floor in a pink bobbed wig and high heels recording the vocals. It’s a moment we giggle about to this day! What you hear is the result of a group of friends making music for the sake of being profoundly unhinged and queerly full of joy.”
BGM follows Infinite Coles’ summer release Boots Ballroom Cnt Mix*, which featured Maleigh Zan and ballroom choreographer Julz. Coles’ long-awaited debut album is expected to arrive soon.
