After the release of their summery new single Speed Racer, Australian indie-rockers Teenage Dads will headline at Manchester’s The Lodge next week. The Manchester gig is one of four UK and Ireland dates the band are playing.
Hailing from Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, the breakthrough indie-act played to some of their biggest audiences to date in support of good-mates Lime Cordiale with Spacey Jane, last year and on two hotly received headline tours of their own across their native Australia.
Now they hit the UK off the back of Speed Racer, their first new music since the release of their Midnight Driving EP.
The track captures the essence of Teenage Dads with retro-inspired vocals, addictive hooks, funk driven basslines and synths and a fusion of genres. Speed Racer was inspired by anime and the movie of the same name. As the band explain, “In reference to the 1967 anime and 2008 film, “Speedracer” is the person that sends your heart racing at a 1000 miles per hour without a second thought.”
The band were nominated for Best New Artist in the 2022 Rolling Stone Awards Australia, alongside names including Genesis Owusu and MAY-A. Covering The Buggles’ ‘80s anthem Video Killed The Radio Star for triple j’s iconic Like A Version segment earlier this year, the band also returned with new music of their own, releasing the Midnight Driving EP and its hit featured singles – it saw the band rack up over 1.6 million streams on Spotify in the process.
