Sunday 16 November:

Royal Northern College of Music – 161114.  Part of new series of concerts ddmmyy, the focus is on ways of exploring accoustic and electronic music.  This concert marks the debut of the 14/15 season and features a world premiere of Manchester composer Laurence Tompkins’ new work as well as pieces by Larry Groves (A glimpse of the sea in a fold of the hills) and Laurence Crane (Octet).  Tickets £6.  7.30pm (NB there is a free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm featuring Laurence Crane).

 

Monday 17 November:

Bridgewater Hall – John Wilson and the John Wilson Orchestra present ‘Cole Porter in Hollywood’.  Featuring special guests Anna-Jane Casey, Matt Ford, Richard Morrison and Scarlett Strallen, the John Wilson Orchestra performs the works of Cole Porter including songs such as I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Night and Day and film pieces Anything Goes and High Society.  Tickets £48-£29.50.  7.30pm.

 

Wednesday 19 November:

Bridgewater Hall – Alexandra Dariescu.  Dubbed as one of the top pianists under 30 set to dominate the world stage by International Piano Magazine, the outstanding Alexandra Dariescu performs Beethoven’s Sonata in D major, Szymanowski’s Nine Preludes and Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor in this lunchtime concert.  Tickets £11.50-£7.  1.10pm

Royal Northern College of Music – Sir John Barbirolli Cello Price.  RNCM students compete for the prestigious price for cello performers.  The competition is adjudicated by Stephen Threlfall, Director of Music at Chetham’s School of Music.  Tickets £8.  7.30pm.

 

Thursday 20 November:

Royal Northern College of Music – RNCM Concert Orchestra.  The RNCM Concert Orchestra presents a free lunchtime concert featuring Carl Maria von Weber’s Oberon Overture and Franz Schubert’s Symphony No 8 in B minor.  Lancelot Fuhry and Steffan Morris conduct.  Free with no ticket required.  1.15pm.

 

Friday 21 November:

Bridgewater Hall – BBC Philharmonic presents Nielsen and Tchaikovsky.  John Stogards conducts and Katherine Bryan is featured on flute as the BBC Philharmonic performs pieces by Tchaikovsky (Fantasy-Overture, Hamlet and Symphony No. 5) and Nielsen (Flute Concerto).  Tickets £37-£12.  7.30pm

 

Saturday 15 November:

Bridgewater Hall – The Halle presents Orchestral Masterpieces.  Wyn Davies conducts and Ester Yoo is featured on violin as the wonderful Halle presents an excellent programme including Rossini’s Overture: The Barber of Seville, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger: Prelude from Act I . Tikets £41-£19.  7.30pm.
