HiFi Sean and David McAlmont have released their new album Happy Ending which is out today through Plastique/LNFG.
The album has been released on LP, CD and download with the vinyl version containing the exclusive track Bunker to Bunker.
HiFi Sean (the former indie star who has reinvented himself as an electronic adventurist, musician, DJ and producer) and David McAlmont (one half of the fabled McAlmont and Butler) recorded Happy Ending at the top of an East London tower block, mixing it in a beach hut on Camber Sands. It should come as no surprise that the album itself is difficult to pin down, much to its advantage.
The album features the lead single All in the World, a track which HiFi Sean admits is “a bit ravey”, hinting the varied approach they take in the 12-track album. From it’s almost Bond-esque opening through the relaxed and even house landscapes, it entrances. It’s an album which experiments with rhythm and rhyme, joyousness and rage, chance and structure. Melodies make way for emphatic bass and Bollywood strings even find their place. There’s an urban feel, synth effects, and gospel influences. This is an album which goes wherever the former Soup Dragons frontman Sean Dickinson and legendary David McAlmont feel like taking it. And it manages to blend perfectly, capturing the listener.
Happy Ending marks the duo’s latest partnership since coming together on Hifi Sean’s collaborative album Ft (a work which included collaborations with the likes of Yoko Ono, Fred Schneider of the B-52’s, Alan Vega and Crystal Waters). It’s a highly interesting, but easy listen and hopefully lays the foundations for more to come.
