Celebrating Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday with pop-up cinema

New Bailey will be celebrating Roald Dahl Day this year with films and much more.  The event, marking his 100th birthday, will see New Bailey hosting Glittering Eyes, a pop-up cinema, as the area is transformed into a Roald Dahl wonderland.

The event will open at 11am on Saturday 10th September with the first film showing, James and the Giant Peach starting at 12pm.  Willy Wonka & the Chocolate factory (1971) will follow at 3pm. Sunday will start at 11am with The Witches at 12pm and Matilda at 3pm.

The wonderland, situated on the Track, the outdoor events space next to Stanley St and New Bailey Street at New Bailey, will feature a giant peach will be positioned next to the cinema where you can climb inside and enjoy story time sessions between films.  There will also be a walk through Willy-Wonka garden and tons of activities to keep the kids entertained! Alongside the full weekend of interactive entertainment there will be Roald Dahl themed food to purchase alongside more traditional street food stalls.

The event signals the desire of New Bailey to bring more family events to the area, following this year’s Manchester Duck Race.  Phil Mayall of Muse Developments commented “After the success of bringing the Manchester Duck Race to New Bailey, we’re keen to see more family focussed events coming here – Glittering Eyes appeals to such a wide range of people and there’s nothing like it in the city centre”.

The pop-up cinema will have a limited capacity of 200 seats per showing.

Tickets may be bought in advance from eventbrite.
