A string of Manchester coffee shops have teamed up with I Love MCR to avoid the use of single-use coffee cups on Friday 24 May.

Fress, Pot Kettle Black, Nibble NQ, Beastro, Michael’s Coffee House and Ancoats Coffee Co will refuse single use coffee cups on Friday.  Instead they are asking customers to bring in reusable cups or purchase one of 500 reusable coffee cups in exchange for a £2.50 donation to the We Love MCR charity.

The I Love MCR team has given the independent coffee shops across the city centre 100% recyclable coffee cups which will be sold for just £2.50 each on top of the sale of each coffee. The money raised from the sale of the reusable cups on the day will all go to the We Love MCR Charity, whose main aim is to improve the lives and life chances of the people of Greater Manchester.

In the UK over 7 million disposable coffee cups are used every day, and it is likely that Manchester alone uses over 350,000 of these every day! Coffee cups are difficult to recycle, and the vast majority end up in landfill or incineration. By using a reusable coffee cup for a daily java, Manc’s are being urged to make the city just a little bit greener.

Only 1% of the 2.5 billion coffee cups thrown away are actually recycled each year, and 46,000 pieces of plastic can be found in every square mile of ocean. Production of plastic is due to double over the next 5 years unless a change in usage occurs. I Love MCR® want to spur on this change in the city of Manchester, a city known for being at the forefront of innovation and change.

The cups the coffee shops will be using on the day are 100% recyclable coffee cups made by local Stockport based Harfield Tableware, featuring the iconic I Love MCR® logo. The cups will also be available to buy online from ilovemanchester.com/shop.
