The fate theme running through this season comes to the fore with the dramatic overture Verdi composed for his great opera The Force of Destiny. Young Chinese virtuoso, Jian Wang, then performs Bloch’s Schelomo. The excellent Nikolaj Znaider conducts Tchaikovsky’s rarely-performed Manfred Symphony, a piece some regard as his greatest orchestral work.

Nicholas Collon, one of the brightest young stars in British music, makes his much-anticipated Hallé debut with a collection of works by turn turbulent, passionate and somber. Each are brilliant – not least Beethoven’s inspirational Seventh Symphony, which was described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’.
