The Northern Soul Orchestrated tour will hit the road again later this year with shows including Manchester’s O2 Apollo.
The tour will open at Liverpool Philharmonic in November. The Manchester date is one of four UK shows announced.
The tour will transport audiences back in time capturing the spirit of a movement. For the tour writer and BBC 6 Music broadcaster Stuart Maconie will join forces with BBC Concert Orchestra. Manchester composer and conductor Joe Duddell also joins the production as the conductor.
Originating in the industrial regions in the 1960s and 70s across the North and the Midlands, the Northern Soul subculture emerged as a passionate and vibrant all-night dance movement. It centred around American soul music. Curated by Stuart and conducted by Joe, the orchestra will perform new arrangements by Fiona Brice and Joe Duddell of Northern Soul classic anthems. They will be joined by a host of special guest vocalists.
Speaking about the new tour Stuart Maconie said, “Even though we knew that this music and performances were spectacular, the success of our first round of northern soul orchestrated has overwhelmed us. These have been some of the most amazing joyous emotional nights of any of our lives and we’re delighted to be doing it all again.”
Matthew Swann Director of the BBC Concert Orchestra said, “The BBC Concert Orchestra first performed this hugely successful stomping celebration of Northern Soul music at the BBC Proms in 2023, and we are thrilled that the passion for it continues. The orchestra and a fantastic line-up of singers celebrate this joyous British club culture movement that took towns across the North and Midlands in 1960s and 70s by storm with a concert that will bring people together, get audiences on their feet and will be enjoyed by original fans as well as well as those just discovering it.”
When does Northern Soul Orchestrated come to Manchester?
Northern Soul Orchestrated comes to Manchester’s O2 Apollo on 26 November. There will also be a performance at Liverpool Philharmonic on 25 November. The Manchester and Liverpool shows are two of four UK dates announced:
25 November – Liverpool, Philharmonic
26 November – Manchester, O2 Apollo
28 November – Stockton, Globe
29 November – Birmingham, Symphony Hall
