EMMMA has released her new single, Cut The Breaks, a track that captures the turmoil of second-guessing a breakup. The song arrives ahead of her upcoming Manchester gig at The Castle, where she will support JC Stewart on his UK tour.
As well as the Manchester gig, EMMMA will support JC Stewart at Liverpool’s Kazimier Stockroom.
Cut The Breaks begins with a soft synth swell before breaking into an urgent alt-pop rhythm. EMMMA’s falsetto soars over a sharp beat, echoing the emotional disarray that comes with moving on from a relationship while being haunted by lingering doubts. The song’s core sentiment is captured in its hook: “We flipped a switch and it’s hard to believe / ‘Cause now you’re a stranger with all of my secrets.”

Discussing the track, EMMMA explains, “This song is about my breakup with my long-term partner in December and how sometimes I’m going about my life and then these feelings of regret and missing and worry hit me like a ton of bricks, like did I make the right choice leaving this person I’ve loved for such a long time, like someone cut the brakes. Also how odd it is that someone can go from your best friend to a total stranger in one day with one choice like losing a limb.”
Cut The Breaks was created in collaboration with producer Paul Whalley, with co-production from Ben Lythe. Lee Smith handled mixing, while mastering was completed by Manon Grandjean.
The single marks a taste of new music following last November’s release of Secondary Character last November. That release brought the artist comparisons with Chappell Roan, Holly Humberstone and Phoebe Bridgers. EMMMA’s recent breakup has fuelled a wave of new songwriting, with more music expected to land in the near future.
When does EMMMA headline at The Castle Hotel in Manchester?
EMMMA will perform in Manchester on Tuesday 20 May at The Castle Hotel as part of JC Stewart’s UK tour. She will also support JC Stewart at Liverpool’s Kazimier Stockroom on 24 May 2025. The Manchester and Liverpool gigs are two of eight UK dates on which she will support JC Stewart:
